Dressmaking & Pattern Reading for Beginners
This a 5 week course each lesson last 2 hours


10 hours tuition over 5 weeks for the whole course. (2 hours per week).
Bring your own sewing machine, although a couple of spare sewing machine will be availble.

Beginner Dressmaking

An ideal opportunity to advance from beginner's course onto making your own items of clothing.
Some of these areas that you will cover include:
  • Know how to calculate and measure fabric needed for garments.
  • Understand pattern and fabric layout.
  • Learn sewing terminology.
  • Know how to hem a garment.
  • Know how to sew different seam types.
  • Understand cutting on grains.
  • Understanding seam allowances.
  • How to insert facing into a garment.
  • Stitching darts.
  • Attaching patch pockets and invisible, side pockets.
  • Working with different types of fabric including jersey.
You will be guided through making your own items of clothing, from simple shirts and blouses, to shorts, trousers and dresses.
Understanding Patterns, Cutting, Fitting & Altering.
The perfect course for those who want to learn to use commercial paper patterns for garment making.
Some of the areas that will be covered include:
  • How to adapt your personal measurements against pattern measurements.
  • Understanding and reading patterns, including notches, dots etc.
  • How to lengthen and shorten patterns to fit.
  • How to draft and cut your own patterns.
  • Grading sizes.
  • How to lengthen and reposition bust darts.
  • Taking in patterns and adjusting overall size.
  • Increasing / decreasing waists, tapering to fit.
