Dressmaking fabric for spring and summer

Spring is finally upon us and summer is right around the corner, and whether dressmaking is your livelihood or hobby, we have a wide selection of beautiful fabrics perfect for creating spring and summer dresses.

Broderie anglaise Fabric

This classic fabric is ideal for spring and summer dresses thanks to its flattering, feminine look and feel. Broderie anglaise fabric has enough detail that it can be used to create more formal clothing yet it’s pattern is subtle enough that it works just as well for casual clothing too. We stock broderie anglaise fabric online in a selection of colours and two widths so you can choose the fabric which best suits your taste, and your design.

100% Linen Fabric

Linen is a beautiful fabric to use in summer clothing. Linen is particularly in vogue this spring with an abundance of linen tops, trousers, skirts and of course dresses hitting our high street and designer shops. This charming fabric is both stylish and comfortable, particularly in hot weather thanks to its ability to keep you cool and dry: Linen won’t cling to your skin, but it will allow air to pass through and absorb perspiration, without becoming damp to the touch.

100% Cotton Fabric

Cotton
, like linen has fantastic thermal properties which help to keep you cool in hot weather and warm as the temperature drops (ideal for those hot English summer days where the temperature plummets in the evening). We stock cotton in an abundance of stylish prints here at BST fabrics. Our floral section offers some wonderful spring patterns.

Chiffon Fabric

Chiffon is a wonderful material for summer clothing. Chiffon is a fairly fine fabric and would resemble a mesh like structure if you were to look at it up close. This mesh/Net like structure gives the fabric a slight transparency so its wise to consider this when dressmaking, or wearing a chiffon garment. Chiffon’s sheer look does make it a great choice for a summer garment however. Chiffon allows good airflow to pass through the fabric and over the skin, keeping you cool on a hot day. The polyester in our chiffon fabric is helps it to act as a wicking material to pull sweat away from the body.

Viscose Fabric

Lightweight and breathable, viscose makes a great choice for spring and summer garments. Viscose is not a synthetic fibre like polyester, but its not a completely natural fibre like linen or cotton either. Viscose can sometimes be reffered to as rayon and is created using regenerated cellulose fibre (plant fibre). We have a selection of viscose prints ideal for dressmaking: This on trend botanical print viscose is an excellent choice for the fashion conscious dressmaker.

Polyester Fabric

Polyester fabric often gets a bad rep because of it’s synthetic make up. However at BST fabrics we believe polyester doesn’t get the credit it deserves for being a strong, resilient and wrinkle resistant material. The downside to polyester is that in contrast to natural fibres, polyester doesn’t absorb moisture. This could make you feel uncomfortable when its especially hot outside as most of the moisture will sit on your skin. Polyester does have some wicking properties however, that pull wetness away from the skin and outside the fabric where it can naturally evaporate. The main benefits of polyester are that it is inexpensive and easy to take care of. There’s no need to be overly cautious when packing a polyester dress in your suitcase and melted ice cream can easily be washed off your polyester dress at a hotter temperature. If you feel this low maintenance fabric will your spring/summer dress making fabric of choice, then we have some lovely prints to choose from.
